Let me be the first to say just how excited I am to be starting off the blogs with Jess and Brock’s cozy engagement session at Black Beach. If you’re not familiar with the North Shore of Minnesota, add this to your list! This little gem is situated about an hour North of Duluth, and is well worth the drive. Capturing Jess and Brock in such a beautiful location filled my heart to the brim.

You wouldn’t know it by looking at these photos (or maybe you would), but we were met with the windiest day! Being just off of Lake Superior, you never know what kind of weather you’ll get – especially in November. Jess and Brock were absolute troopers, though. They had the brightest smiles on their faces the entire time, wind whipping and all. As a photographer, my goal is to ensure that my couples feel comfortable as I guide them. I never want them to feel like they are being put into stiff, uncomfortable poses. These two lovers were absolute naturals and embraced being snuggled up to keep warm!

If you didn’t know, I am actually a deaf photographer! I do plan to have a blog post up soon chatting about what it’s like to work with a deaf photographer, but for now, I’ll explain how it worked with these two lovers. When I work with hearing couples, I’m not able to use verbal cues to communicate. Instead, I use gestures, demonstrate, show inspiration, or type on my phone. I think hearing couples may find it to be intimidating before working with a deaf photographer. However, I’ve been lucky enough to have so many wonderful couples (like Jess and Brock). As soon as we start working together, it’s easy to get into a flow. By the end of Jess and Brock’s Black Beach Engagement Session, our faces were sore from smiling the entire time.

The time spent running up and down the shore on that cold November day with Jess and Brock went by way too quickly. Their cozy engagement session at Black Beach is a moment that I will forever cherish. Not too long after photographing them along the North Shore, I had the honor of capturing this sweet couple in a different kind of environment. On yet another cold Minnesota day, these two cozied up for an indoor couples session. (I can’t wait to share more from that special day).
