What Is Eloping? And Why It Might Be Perfect for You

If you’re here, you’ve probably wondered what it actually means to elope. Maybe the word makes you think of quick courthouse visits or impulsive getaways to Vegas. I get it—when I got married, I thought that was all eloping could be too. Spoiler alert: I was so wrong. Eloping is so much more than that, and it could be exactly what you’re dreaming of without even realizing it.

Eloping is about crafting a day that’s entirely, beautifully, and authentically yours.

There’s no rulebook for how you should get married when you elope. Want to hike to a foggy mountain ridge at sunrise? You can do that. Prefer a cozy ceremony on a beach with the sound of waves as your soundtrack? That’s on the table too. Eloping gives you permission to skip the stress, skip the expectations, and instead focus on what matters most: your love.

So, what is eloping, really?

At its core, eloping is about stepping away from tradition and celebrating your marriage in a way that feels right for you. It’s not about running off in secret or rushing through the day—it’s about being intentional. You get to trade a packed guest list and tight schedule for an intimate experience that truly reflects your relationship.

For some couples, that might mean adventuring together somewhere wild and new. For others, it’s keeping things simple in a place that already feels like home. Eloping isn’t about where or how—it’s about the why.

Why Do Couples Choose to Elope?

  • Because they’re madly in love and want a wedding day that celebrates them.
  • Because they’d rather invest in memories than in a venue that seats 300 people.
  • Because planning a traditional wedding feels overwhelming (and expensive).
  • Because they feel most alive in nature or are drawn to something different, something adventurous.

Eloping doesn’t have to mean trekking to a mountaintop (unless you want it to). It can also mean starting your day slow and peaceful, like sharing coffee on the front porch of an A-frame cabin as the sun peeks through the trees. It’s about creating space for your favorite things—big or small—on a day you’ll never forget.

I’ve had the honor of capturing couples saying their vows with waves rolling over the rocks, at the edge of Artist’s Point with the waves crashing in, and the breezy air from Lake Superior at Grand Marais. And every single one of those moments was intimate, emotional, and completely theirs.
